Firstly this Newsletter seemed like the best idea to deliver all of the latest information in one place, as so much is happening all at once Facebook isn't always the best place to notify you as posts get lost in the feed. So these newsletters won't be a regular instalment, unless of course you think it's a good idea? Let us know what you think...

Boston’s best at Biscathorpe
By Elena Pepperdine
Boston Triathlon Club placed 5th in Biscathorpe cross-country on the 9th of January. The tri club had fourteen competitors race in the under 11s, 13s, and 15s also seniors plus veterans. All the competitors were running on grass verges and fields with hills thrown in the mix. Despite the wet and muddy terrain, it was a beautiful day with a brisk breeze.
The first race started with under 11s with Rosie Ladds along with Freya Wheeler competing for Boston tri and placing 4th and 5th respectively. They fortunately were spared from running through the ford due to the depth as it had heavily rained the previous days.
The next race was junior, senior, as well as veteran men. Five of the club competed in the veteran category, Ben Marsters, Alan Wheeler, Steven Roberts, Barry Douce, and Kelvin Clements. They then went on to place 14th, 21st, 29th,48th, as well as 49th respectively.
After that, the under 13s competed with George Ellis placing 12th out of the boys along with Willow Wheeler and Emily Douce placing 8th and 9th with the same time. The river crossing was a tricky obstacle to face as some competitors got a fresh dunking when tackling it.
The fourth race saw under 15s girls and boys, and under 17 women run 4.5k and representing Boston Triathlon Club was Joe Douce who placed 13th in the under 15 boy’s category.
The last race of the day was junior, senior, veteran women and under 17 men. Katie Ball finished 7th in the senior age group with Melenie Wheeler and Jayne Clements placing 19th and 27th in the veteran category.
Overall, the Boston Triathlon placed 5th in the men’s category and unfortunately didn’t place in the women.
Everybody competing raced brilliantly and had fun, which is the most important aspect of an event like this.

Boston Triathlon Club enjoy a day out in Nottingham
Saturday 28th Aug saw the much anticipated return of one of the more relaxed events in the annual Triathlon calendar, with The Huub Triathlon Relay Championship taking place at the National Water sports centre in Nottingham.
Billed at “Organised Chaos”, the event is known more for its fun element than racing, the Relays have been a firm favourite with triathletes for over 30 years.
The format of the day consists of two race opportunities with a morning and afternoon session. Teams of four people all must complete a 500m open water swim in the regatta lake, followed by a fast flat 15km bike around the lake, finished off with a 5km run also around the park grounds.
Unlike the traditional relay format, all the team must complete each discipline before moving onto the next one. With participants being able to rest between their turn, this leads to some exciting racing, and fast times!
155 teams raced in the morning, followed by a further 135 teams in the afternoon session.
This year saw a total of 8 teams represent Boston across the two sessions, with three members even completing “The Double”, taking on the course twice and being in two different teams!
As well as it being a great day and atmosphere, there was also a podium finish for club members Tom Sargeant, Katie Ball, Matt Purbrick and Emily Purbrick of Team Speed who came 2nd in the Mixed Race Team.

Coningsby - Coast Sportive
We were super excited to be able to bring you this amazing Sportive, the first to be held by Boston Triathlon Club. Starting at the Leagate Inn, Coningsby, venturing into the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds, before heading out to the East Coast. The return leg brought you across the Lincolnshire Fen's towards Boston known for being flat, offering amazing scenic farmland views and quiet roads.
With 136 cyclists entered on one of the two available routes, spirits were high on Sunday morning (15th Aug) when the participants congregated in the car park of the Leagate Inn ahead on their morning ride.
The two routes both started and came to a finish at the popular Leagate Inn in Coningsby. The cyclists headed out into the Wolds climbing Fulletby, Belchford and Brink hills before a rest stop just outside Alford. The 55 miles route turned off shortly after cutting out 13 miles of route before joining back with the 68 mile route just in time to climb Kirkby hill at Old Bolingbroke.
Unfortunately the weather was not kind for the ride back to Coningsby with head winds the whole way.
On arrival back at the Leagate Inn the cyclists were able to take advantage of the comfortable patio area to enjoy a well earned burger and beer.
The Leagate Osteopath was also offering much needed recovery massages for a small charitable donation and raised an amazing £150 for Alzheimers charites in the process.
We would like to say a massive thank you to The Leagate Inn & Leagate Osteopath for hosting us for the day and Hallgate Timber for helping to ensure our entrants didn't get lost.
Finally congratulations to Lea & Craig for organising and managing the whole sportive, they did a tremendous job and never stopped trying to make it the best event possible. Rearranging the setup as the day went on to offer the best experience they could.
If you took part we hope you enjoyed it, and we look forward to seeing you all at the next one.

Boston Triathlon Club see the sights in London
London’s iconic landmarks were the backdrop to the London Triathlon Event which took place at the Excel Centre in the Docklands over the weekend.
The event now in its 22nd year sees thousands of people attend over two days to take on the challenge of swimming in the Royal Victoria Dock, cycling the closed road circuits around London, and finally running along the dock side and Excel building.
The wind direction and strength made the conditions choppy for the swimmers to complete the 1500m out and back loop of the dock. Unfortunately, this was not the only adverse weather the competitors had to contend with. As the heavens opened just before 9am it meant the majority of the time would be spent riding the 40k circuit taking in London landmarks such as The Tower of London, The Shard, and the London Eye and Westminster done in driving rain and wind. There was latterly some degree of respite for them as they finally headed out to complete the course with a 3 lap 10k run along the dock side which was partially inside the Excel building.
This year saw 9 of BTC’s members take on the challenge.
Ben Marsters finished 2nd in his age group in a time of 2:03:03. Ben, who is representing the GB Age-Group Team for the Middle Distance in Bilbao, Spain in 2022, may now have the opportunity to participate in the 2022 ITU Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships in Abu Dhabi.
6 others also took on the Olympic course, Ian Satchwell, Steve Roberts, Rachael Satchwell, Melanie Wheeler, Kimberley Bolland and Philip Roberts.
Unfortunately, due to a mechanical failure Philip wasn’t able to complete the bike course, but not to be beaten he carried his bike back to the Excel, and headed out on the run to complete the event.
Alan Wheeler and Lynsey Ballans also bravely took on the longer Olympic Plus Distance which saw them complete a 3 lap 80k bike course on top of the 1500m swim and 10k run.

Holkham Outlaw Half Weekend & Derby Junior Triathlon
Boston Triathlon members travelled to the Norfolk coast this last weekend to take part in the Outlaw Holkham Weekend.
Set in the vast stunning grounds of the historic Holkham Estate, Outlaw Half Holkham is without doubt one of the UK’s most beautiful triathlon events. With the onsite camping and the Outlaw running events taking place on the Saturday there is a real festival feel.
Organised by OSB Events, the Holkham Outlaw weekend combines junior racing on the Saturday in the Future Outlaw race series, alongside the Half Marathon and 10k adult races. And then the Middle-distance Half Outlaw triathlon on the Sunday.
The Half Marathon with its challenging undulating course was the first race to kick start proceedings on Saturday morning, with Ian Satchwell winning his age group category in a personal best time of 1hr 34mins.
The 10k event followed on in the afternoon, which saw 5 BTC members race. Alan Wheeler was the first member to finish in a time of 40:04mins.
Open to children from age 4 to 16 the Future Outlaw running events cover either a 1.2mile or 2.4mile course around the grounds of the hall. A total of eleven juniors took part over both the distances.
Hugo Ward and Thomas Benton saw the BTC juniors home in their respective races. There were several closely fought battles between team members which saw their training and competitive spirits come to the fore finishing with sprints up the famous Outlaw orange carpet right to the finish line!
It was then the turn of fifteen of the BTC members to take on the challenge of the Outlaw Half Holkham triathlon course on the Sunday. Eleven were attempting to complete the full distance, with two teams of three taking part as Relay teams. The scenic course consists of a 1.2mile swim in the lake, a 56miles undulating bike course around the roads of Norfolk, and finishes with an unenviable 13.1mile run around the grounds.
The bad weather which had been forecast to threaten on the Sunday held off, and the first swimmers set off in the morning sun just before 6am. Due to social distancing restrictions everyone entered the water in a rolling start with the last of the teams finally entering the water after 7am.
After the staggered starts of over 1500 participants the leaders were soon re-entering transition after their bike to take on the undulating run course around the grounds of Holkham Hall. With the run course being three laps, there were plenty of opportunities for supporters to be able to cheer the competitors on, which was much needed on this hot muggy day.
First home for BTC was Tom in a time of 4hrs 23mins which earned him 3rd in his 25-29 age group category.
BTC Junior member Rosie Ladds also competed in the Junior Triathlon at Derby, in which she came 9th girl in the TriStar1 age group.

Rosie Ladds 9th girl 23rd TriStar1
Nottingham Outlaw Half & Future, Lakemans and Malory Park.
Boston Triathlon members travelled across the UK last weekend to compete in several organised events.
Organised by OSB Events, the Nottingham Outlaw weekend combines junior racing on the Saturday in the Future Outlaw race series, with the Middle-distance Nottingham Half Outlaw triathlon on the Sunday. Located at the National Water Sports centre in Holme Pierrepont and now it its 9 year it has become one of the must-do events for athletes of all ability levels.
Open to children from age 4 to 16 the Future Outlaw running events cover either a 1.2mile or 2.4mile course around the main regatta lake. First up to race on the Saturday were three junior members from Boston Tri.
Freya Wheeler and Rosie Ladds took part in the Mini race of 1.2miles. It was a close finish to the end, with Freya taking 7th place in a field of 44 children, and Rosie finishing close behind in 8th place even though she lost her trainer on the last 100metres to the finish line!
Not to be out done by her little sister’s effort, Willow Wheeler then went on to run in the 2.4miles Junior race where she gave everything she had to take 7th place in a field of 32 participants.
It was then the turn of seven of the BTC members to take on the Outlaw Half Nottingham triathlon course on the Sunday. The fast, scenic course consists of a 1.2mile swim in the main regatta lake, a 55.2miles undulating bike course, and finishes with 13.1mile run around the lake and grounds.
The event gives people the opportunity to race alongside Elite athletes, as was the case on Sunday when Triathlon legend Tom Don took on the course and didn’t disappoint with a 3rd place finish.
The weather conditions were breezy and cool when the participants were preparing to enter the water. First off was Tom Sargent closely followed by Katie Ball and Matt Purbrick. Due to social distancing restrictions everyone entered the water in a rolling start off the piers, so it wasn’t long before the remaining members of Alan Wheeler, Andy Cole, Martin Jessop and Zoe Ward were all in the water and away before 7am.
After the staggered starts of over 1200 participants the leaders were soon re-entering transition after their bike to take on the undulating run course around the grounds of the National Water Sports Centre.
The rain which had been forecast throughout the day held off until after lunch, so conditions were ideal to run the half marathon distance.
First home for BTC was Tom in a time of 4hrs 35mins which earned him 6th in his 25-29 age group category. Katie Ball also obtained a top ten finish in her own category, finishing 8th in the 30-34 females.
Tom Sargent 4:35:43 6th 25-29m, 81st overall
Matt Purbrick 4:46:48 18th 30-34m, 137th overall
Alan Wheeler 5:10:06 39th 45-49m, 314th overall
Katie Ball 5:15:58 8th 30-34f, 379th overall
Andy Cole 5:23:04 60th 45-49m, 438th overall
Zoe Ward 6:31:38 27th 40-44f, 1016 overall
Martin Jessop 6:56:30 138th 50-54m, 1120 overall
Over in Keswick BTC member Beth Wilmot was competing in the Lakemans Middle distance triathlon.
Set in the scenic surroundings of the Lake District, the Lakemans middle and full distance events are not to be underestimated for their challenging courses and terrain.
The Lakemans 1.2mile swim is in one of the Lake Districts most scenic lakes, Derwent Water. The 56mile bike route takes competitors along the side of the lakes where they get view scenery of mountains on one side and sea on the other. The 13.1mile run then consists of 4 laps of a scenic course around the countryside and into the local town of Keswick.
In a field of 154 women Beth took an amazing 2nd place, 1st in her age category with a time of 4hrs 49mins.
Beth Wilmot 4:49:55 1st 40-44f, 29th overall.
Another BTC junior was also racing over at Mallory Park Race circuit in Leicestershire at the Race Rapid Children’s triathlon. An event which forms part of the East Midlands Junior Championships.
Tegan Phillips competed in the TriStar 3 age category which consisted of a 400metre open water swim in the onsite lake, a 7.5km bike around the race circuit, finished off by a 2.4km run.
The 5 lap smooth bike course can lead to some fast finishing times, and Tegan gave it her all to finish in 22nd position in the TriStar female category.

Keyo Brigg Bomber Triathlon
Boston Triathlon Club dominate in North Lincs Triathlon!
After the long wait athletes have had to be able to take part in races again, this weekend saw six of Boston Triathlon Club members take on the Keyo Brigg Bomber Standard distance triathlon. The event organised by LincsQuad consisted of a 0.8km swim in the river Ancholme (reduced from the normal Standard distance due to Covid controls), a 32km flat course road cycle, and finished with a 10km road run along the river bank. The fast course and perfect weather conditions resulted in some outstanding performances and BTC members completely dominating the standings. Ben Marsters and Emily Purbrick lead by example and both took 1st place as Male and Female event winners! Other achievements across the six athletes included the fastest swim and bike times of the day, Senior Male winner, Veteran Male winner and Veteran Female winner. |
